Winfried (Peter Simonischeck) doesn't see his daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) often. He decides to surprise her with a visit after the death of his dog. It's awkward because as a serious career woman, Ines is working on an important project in Bucharest. Practical joker Winfried loves to annoy his daughter with funny pranks.

At the end of the 80’s, by the creeks of the Arauca river, near the Colombian-Venezuelan border, two men survived the brutality of a shooting in which 14 of their mates were killed. They claimed to be mere fishermen, but the Venezuelan army accused them to be guerrilla fighters, intimidating them in every possible way and even attempting to remove them from the cell where they were guarded by a policeman. Their neighbors prevented their transfer, but the pressure they faced to give in and submit to the official version was overwhelming.

Set in the rich landscape of Trinidad’s Carnival Season, Gregory, a young black working-class eighteen-year-old stars in a local play where he is noticed by James Young, an older affluent businessman. James feels immediately attracted to Gregory and pursues him.
On Carnival Monday the young men cover their bodies in blue paint and dressed as devils, descend down into the valley, howling and drumming, lost in the carnal dance. This is the scene of a fateful confrontation that will change their lives forever.
